Deeper Tarot - 3 Rules For Reading Better

Have a desire to read cards really well? Here are 3 basic rules to take tarot reading to a deeper level.

It seems so simple. You buy a deck of tarot cards and a book filled with instructions on how to read the cards. But you struggle back and forth from cards to booklet to cards and back again. It's confusing - which words match my question? What if no words match what I am asking?  Even worse, you are not even sure you are really reading.

Losing the dependence on the instruction book is vital to being a "real" tarot reader. Granted there are people who never need a book at all. Some people see a tarot deck for the first time and off they go. These people have a gift that can be developed by all of us if we are persistent.

Here are three rules to follow to develop skills as a Tarot reader:

  1. Develop "knowing".  Tarot is a lifelong pursuit.  The meaning and understanding of the cards will grow deeper and more detailed as you study and experience life.  Developing your intuition is no different.  Find a meditative discipline that you are comfortable with to develop "knowing".  EXERCISE: To begin to develop "knowing", add a tarot card to your meditation practice.  Take one a week and study it visually before you close your eyes to meditate.  Once your eyes are closed, visualize the card and see what you can recall.

  2. Lose the instructions. We all tend to have a dependence on what we perceive to be right or correct. Frankly, there is not a "right" way to read for someone. Readings are all about focus and intent. If you frequent tarot readers you have probably noticed each has their own way of reading. In order for you to read at a deep level, you must find your own way too. EXERCISE: Try developing your own spread. You can begin with a preprinted spread if you just don't know where to begin, then change the meanings of each position according to what you want to glean from this particular reading. Make it a spread just for money issues or one just for romantic concerns. Maybe each one will look different having more foundation cards than the other or having the cards create a pattern more suited to the topic. Circle readings are my personal favorites - what's yours?

  3. Practice, practice, practice. Practice is the only way to get good at anything and part of practice is study. Read for people, friends, relatives and people you do not know well at all. There is nothing more confidence building than to read for a stranger and have them nod in understanding of what you are seeing. Reading for the general public is a fascinating way to study the cards. Tell them you are learning and would love to read for them for free. If you don't have time or a pool of people to read for, read for yourself. EXERCISE: Pull a card every morning and record the card along with the date in a notebook. Before you go to bed in the evening, pull out that notebook and the card you pulled and make notes about the card and how it related to your day. Record everything that comes to mind, even if it doesn't quite make sense.

It is difficult at best to relay the nuances of a card in print, hence instruction booklets can only inform to a point.  Nuances are what tarot and life are all about.  When you are not studying the nuances then you are just reading in a static manner.  To go to a deeper level of tarot reading you must have your own experiences with what the nuances might be.  The only way to do this is through direct life experience with the tarot cards.
